BTS / Monterosa neutralized its Group carbon footprint

BTS goes a firm step further for the environment and sustainability in India

Zurich, 14 May 2010

Following its endeavours to neutralize its carbon emissions (termed the "carbon footprint") through its business operations in Zurich in 2008, BTS Monterosa Group, an independent provider of financial services to global players active in India and the Asian markets, extended its commitment to the environment and sustainability in India in 2009 by extending its carbon neutralization programme to include all the Group’s operations in Zurich, Mumbai and Port Louis.

The Groups’ increased commitment resulted in a carbon emission neutralization of 602 tons Co2 equivalent in 2009. This compares to 221 tons in 2008 where the Group started out neutralizing its Zurich office & operations, and is an increase of more than 170%. As in 2008, carbon neutralization was realized by cooperating with the external partner ‘First Climate’ and providing financial support for a renewable energy generation project in India.

The project, a biomass waste to energy project in Andhra Pradesh State in India, has been certified as a UNFCCC CDM project and meets the requirements of the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VER project). The project aims to convert methane to bio energy. By using modern technology, methane from a sugar refinery’s wastewater is captured and used to generate electricity. This project has a measurable impact on sustainability and not only contributes to the conservation of natural resources by using the energy potential of waste products but also creates employment opportunities in the local community. "We are proud of this step," said Susanne Grossmann, Managing Partner of BTS. "BTS works together with reputable investors from the private and public sectors. Especially the public sector investors, such as SIFEM or ADG, our long-term co-investors for the Indian market, have a very high environment and sustainability benchmark. By offsetting the total carbon emissions of our Group, we meet the high standards of our investors while at the same time showing our commitment and firm conviction in the sustainable development of India."
